Welcome to Roger Carpenter’s (Greg In Wild) website!  I am happy to report that I completed the Appalachian Trail on December 15, 2021. Combined with the Pacific Crest Trail in 1996 and Continental Divide Trail in 2016, I earned the Triple Crown of Long Distance Hiking! I am posting a story about each of the three trails as a way to describe how I managed to complete the trails as I matured from 42 years old to 67! Links to each post are below.

I am celebrating a BIG MILESTONE birthday! Thanks to my lovely wife Cindy Kleinegger for making the day very special by treating me to a very large cinnamon roll for breakfast, a 4-mile walk to Ricardos for lunch while I wore a new Montbell Versalite jacket! The snow showers stopped just in time! Cake and champagne will be served this evening. It appears my FB was cloned. Please do not friend the clone! One of me is bad enough! Christmas 1958 in Detroit, Michigan. Left to right: Brian Carpenter (1 year old), James Carpenter (7) and me (4). For those who celebrate, Merry Christmas! Remembering my parents on Veterans Day, November 11. Dad was a navigator with a B-17 bomber group stationed in England until WW2 ended in 1945. Mom volunteered with the U.S. Navy WAVES (Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service). Earlier this year I traveled to Glatton Airfield where a memorial for the U.S. Air Force is displayed. A few remnants of the base exist 78 years after the war ended. Segment 4 and the final three days of my hike on the Pacific Crest Trail. The landscape was very photographable by offering waterfalls, panoramic views, little critters (squirrels and such) and green, living forest after leaving the 2017 burn zone. But it also zapped my energy while ascending over 11,000 feet in three days. Once again I met and chatted with some northbound PCT hikers hoping to reach Canada to complete their thru-hikes. Wonderful people! Celebrating a hike well done at Timberline Lodge. Pacific Crest Trail starting at Snoqualmie Pass, Washington on August 22 to Mt. Hood, Oregon on September 13. All 296 miles and the nice people I met were awesome!
