The Coast to Coast Walk

The Coast to Coast Walk in England

St. Bees to Robin Hood’s Bay, England

In the 1970s Alfred Wainwright, an accountant, created a walking route across England. Known as the 190-mile long Coast to Coast Walk, the east-west route begins on the shore of the Irish Sea near the village of St. Bees. The eastern terminus is in the village of Robin Hood’s Bay on the shore of the North Sea. I describe the journey as a B&B and pub walk because villages along the route have B&Bs, guest houses and pubs with upstairs rooms for nightly accommodations. In between the villages are the mountains and beautiful English countryside to enjoy.

According to the article in BBC News, it was named in 2003 as one of the best walks in the world.

My lovely wife, Cindy, and I will be hiking the Coast to Coast (C2C) beginning on June 18, 2023. Cindy has hiked most of the C2C a few years before we were married. I spent three days along the eastern portion of the C2C in June 2013 during a visit to England for my work at the time. I promised to return to England someday and hike the entire route. Ten years later I will do it!
