Day 104, October 4: West Virginia

See my current, real-time location and daily trail log.

According to the Appalachian Trail Conservancy the West Virginia portion of the AT is only 25 miles. After hiking 9 miles today I expect my stay in the state will end tomorrow! Virginia, the next state going southbound, has the most distance of all 14 states along the trail.

Shenandoah River from a highway bridge near Harpers Ferry.

On October 4 I left Harpers Ferry at 1:00pm after picking up two important care packages. My lovely wife Cindy sent her wonderfully nutritious granola, which I look forward to enjoying as part of my morning rest stop. The box also included potato chips, and several other treats. My long time friends Matt and Shelly Aiello sent amazing chocolate chip cookies which may last all the way to my next resupply stop on October 7 in Front Royal, unless I binge eat them on one of the days my Fitbit tells me I burned over 5,000 calories! Oh, and it is worth noting I have my light-as-a-feather Leki trekking poles back! Leki covered the broken sections under warranty. The trick going forward will be to NOT break them again.

Just 9 miles hiked this afternoon. Tomorrow will be challenging!

It was very cool to have this view from the hiker bunk room at The Town’s Inn. The train station is in the middle.
It looks like the rocks were moved off the trail a long time ago. How refreshing!
Beautiful forest along the ridgetop.

  1. You are doing great! What an incredible adventure you are having. I really enjoy following along. It brings back a lot of wonderful memories. Don’t forget to stay at Chica & Sunsets Hostel when you get to Franklin, TN. They are friends of mine and will take excellent care of you. Happy hiking!
